Spy technology used to reside in the realms of the world’s superpowers and the Hollywood film industry. In popular culture, espionage has always been associated with amazing gadgetry that facilitates the covert and clandestine operations of spies. In recent years, gadgets that in the past were exclusive to government and corporate spies have been making their way into the public domain. Spy technology is in great demand these days. Moviegoers who enjoy spy-themed films pay close attention to the gadgets, and it seems as if it’s only a matter of time before a manufacturer comes up with an acceptable and affordable home version of the spy gadget. Just because a spy gadget is designed for mainstream use does not mean that it is not technologically advanced.

And if your local spy shop is able to provide you with equipment that can secretly extract confidential information; can you imagine the kind of military grade espionage devices used by governments these days that we don’t know about?

The 1998 film Enemy of the State is a cautionary tale about the far reaching surveillance and eavesdropping capability of the United States when it comes to spying on its citizenry. Among the many hidden electronic surveillance gadgets featured in the movie, audio recording bugs that remotely pick up conversations are predominant.

In the 1996 film Mission Impossible, American IMF agent Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) is double crossed by members of his spy team who make him out to be a rogue agent. In a memorable scene from the movie, Agent Hunt wears fashionable eyeglasses that conceal a tiny camera used to capture images of sensitive documents and blueprints. Today’s spy sunglassescan do more than just take photos. They can discreetly record full color VGA video and audio at 20 frames per second. Storage capacity can be expanded to 8GB with MicroSD cards, and recordings can be easily transferred to a computer via USB. Sadly, x-ray glasses such as the ones worn by James Bond in The World Is Not Enough aren’t yet available. Check out Spy Sunglasses Available

James Bond is no stranger to spy gadgets. In 1983’s Octopussy, Agent 007 wore a Seiko wristwatch that allowed him to receive messages from MI6 and also record video. Thanks to today’s tiny DVR technology, a watch can be transformed into a spy camera that can record audio and full color video at 25 frames per second. Internal flash memory permits storage of up to 4GB or 15 hours of recordings.

Ink pens are popular items used to conceal gadgets in spy films. In Never Say Never Again, James Bond carried a fountain pen decorated with the Union Flag which doubled as an explosive weapon. In the spy comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little, actor Bill Murray was stabbed with a truth serum pen. The spy pen DVR camera is one of the most discreet spy cams available. It can record up to 4 hours of full color video and audio, and it features a simple one-button recording mechanism for extra discretion. This is one of the most highly wearable and less conspicuous spy gadgets available.

In Enemy of the State, the National Security Agency was able to hide recording bugs in places no one would suspect, such as inside lamps and television sets. Would anyone ever suspect a fully working calculator to be a covert recording device? The calculator DVR spy camera houses a tiny DVR that can record up to 12 hours of full color video and audio which can later be transferred to a PC or smartphone via USB. This is a perfect device that can be discreetly planted in an office or inside a home. Check out Camera DVR Cameras Available

Chris Tucker in Fifth Element

Chris Tucker Fifth Element

Chris Tucker Fifth Element

SciFi has some unusually flamboyant characters. I dont know why, but it seems acceptible to have these over-the-top carricatures of future personalities and aliens in science fiction… As a result, over time I will be adding all my favourites here.

I saw The Fifth Element again recently, and it struck me how good Chris Tucker was at playing that absurdly insane character. In particular, his “Ruby Rap” was an exceptional piece of insanity. I actually forgot that he was in the movie at all…
