Top Prize for Spanish language fantasy film Pans Labyrinth

The National Society of Film Critics, an American film critic organization, honored Guillermo del Toro’s Spanish-language fantasy film “Pan’s Labyrinth” with the title of ‘Year’s Best Picture’.

Pan’s Labyrinth is already rumored to be the favorite in the Best Foreign Language Film category at this year’s Oscar competition. In recent years most of the winners of NSFC’s Best Picture winners are foreign films, and they rarely match with the Academy Awards.

“Pan’s Labyrinth” is set in post-Civil War northern Spain in 1944. Its the story of Ofelia, her heavily pregnant mother and her stepfather, who move into a new home in the countryside. Ofelia soon becomes enraptured by fairy tales and magic lands after discovering an ancient labyrinth guarded by a faun. .

Other NSFC winners included Forest Whitaker as best actor in “The Last King of Scotland”, Helen Mirren as best actress in “The Queen” and Paul Greengrass as best director for “United 93”.
