Scanners to be remade

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

David Cronenberg’s 1981 SF horror movie Scanners is going to be remade by Dimension Films. The original Scanners told the story of a weapons corporation trying to use people with telepathic and telekinetic abilities (Scanners) as weapons. Still don’t know what film I’m talking about? It’s the one with the exploding-head finale.

The film will be directed by Saw II director Darren Lynn Bousman. The film will be written by David Goyer who also wrote Blade and Batman Begins.

Dimension hopes to start production in early 2008 and release it later the same year.

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Heroes is going digital. The hit American TV series on the the NBC network is relaunching its Web site with new interactive features coinciding with a batch of new original on-air episodes. NBC hopes the multiplatform strategy will deepen the “Heroes” mythos with additional content for Internet and mobile applications.

Some of these new digital offerings include a real-time, two-screen application that plays out on the PC along with each episode, commentary from cast members set to streamed episodes, and mobile content.

NBC is even making special viral clips to help promote Heroes on video sharing sites like Vmix and YouTube. The latest Heroes clip is a parody called Zeroes about ordinary people with relatively pointless abilities. Check it out on Vmix or YouTube. If you are a fan of the show you’ll really enjoy it.

Spocks suit goes on ebay

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Spock’s space suit from the original Star Trek Movie has been sold on ebay for $10,100, roughly £5,000 and quite of a lot of money though not as much as you would expect for the suit.

The suit was worn by Spock as he drifted through space to mind-meld with the V’Ger Probe in the first film and its unsurprising that the suit is so highly valued by trek fans. $10,100 is a bargain.

This piece of movie memorabilia had only had 10 bidders and bids stayed below the $5,000. Towards the end of the auction the big trek fans had finally found their way to the party and within 4 bids the price had doubled.

Some trek fan must be quite chuffed with the bargain they’ve got.

Welsh Roswell debunked?

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Contributions to Wikipedia claim that the Welsh Roswell, a UFO incident in which aliens are said to have crash-landed into a remote Welsh mountain range in 1974 was actually a combination of an earthquake, a meteor shower and poachers carrying lanterns.

The Berwyn Mountains Incident which is often referred to as the Welsh Roswell has been one of Britain’s most famous UFO sightings. Reports of the incident involve people seeing “fairy lights” floating over the mountains, an orange ball on the mountainside and others have claimed to have seen “non-human beings” being handled by military personnel. All very suspicious activity.

Understandably those who have strongly believed in the incident have hit back at the “debunking” which is a bizarre set of coincidences but some would say that its far more likely to have an earthquake, meteor shower and poachers gracing the mountains together on one night than aliens.

Tapping to join Stargate Atlantis

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

With the longest running sci fi show coming to an end there has been much talk about what will happen to the stars of Stargate SG-1.

One cast member has been confirmed to move onto a familiar show. Amanda Tapping who plays astrophysicist Samantha Carter will be moving to the show’s spin off, Stargate Atlantis.

Tapping has guest starred a number of times on the show as the two shows have crossed over but this time it seems that she may join the regular cast for good.

After the tenth and final season has ended, Tapping’s character will join Atlantis for 14 of Atlantis season four’s 20 episodes.

MGM has decided to continue the story of SG-1 with two direct-to-DVD movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. If these first two are successful, MGM will produce an ongoing series of movies.
