There is a tweet going round – i dont know who started it, but they seem to have gotten the 25 year anniversary of Back To The Future 1 confused with the fictional date of Doc Browns travel to the future:
In ‘Back to the Future’, Doc sets clock in the DeLorean to a day 25 years in the future. Today is that day.
It is escalating like wildfire:
THIS IS INCORRECT!!!!!
From the BTTF wiki:
Doc Brown of Timeline 1 had always dreamed of seeing the future, looking beyond his years, seeing the progress of mankind, and seeing who would win the next twenty-five World Series. On October 26, 1985, he was preparing to set the time circuits to 2010, but the Libyans found him before he could input the new destination time. Doc Brown of Timeline 2 preferred going 30 years ahead, and traveled to 2015 after dropping Marty off at Lyon Estates.

No. You are wrong. The tweet states that he sets the clock to today’s date, which is perfectly true. Granted he never travels, but the tweet does not say he does.
Since you didn’t link where this came from, here: http://bttf.wikia.com/wiki/2010
(Sorry, I had to go find the link because I couldn’t be sure that this wasn’t just as much made up as the original.)
@David I will double check… but without the DVD at hand I cant prove it. Doc set it for 15 years in the future 0 that date at that point was Oct.
UPDATE: See other comments below.
@Bob – sorry about that i will add the link in the post.
@David Doc never sets the clock to July 5, 2010 (I just popped in the DVD and watched the parking lot scene). He does say he is going 25 years into the future, which would be 2010, but when he makes the comment it is October 26th, 1985.
So, I’ve just watched BTTF1, and can clear up this once and for all.
Doc DOES NOT set the time circuits for anytime in 2010.
It is his intention to go “25 years into the future” (on Oct 26th 1985) but as you well know he is not able to travel through time at this point as he is chased down and caught by the Lybians before he manages to key this date in. By this point he has only input 4 dates to the time circuits;
- 1 minute into the future, to send his dog through time.
- JULY 4TH 1776 – Declatation of independance (Showing Marty where they ‘could go’)
- December 25, 0000 (same as above, birth of Jesus)
- November 5th 1955, the date when he his his head and discovered the Flux Capacitor, and where marty ends up. (Doc- “A red letter day in the history of science”)
I think the confusion has come about between the July 4th 1776, and the idea he “Intended” on travelling to the year 2010.
Peace out, and I look forward to the tweets/fb messages on October 21th 2015
@Tony Excellent work. Cant believe twitter went into an overdrive with shitty info.
Well, to be technical, he did say he was going to travel 25 years into the future. That would be 2010. In the movie’s timeline, that’s October 26th, 2010 if you do the math. But in reality, the movie was released July 5, 1985. So in essence, 25 years later would be July 5, 2010. So the tweet is both wrong and right at the same time.
Ryan, the film was released on July 3, 1985, not July 5.
What is date they go to in back to future 2?
@Ryan Actually, the film was released on July 3rd. I don’t know where this July 5th thing is coming from.

alternate solve:
Had the test at the mall parking lot been July 5 — why would Marty have been late for school the morning before the test and where were all the fireworks???
Great news! This means that there is still almost 3 months left to invent hovering skateboards. Come on, Tweeter army, you can do it.
“Cant believe twitter went into an overdrive with shitty info.”
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Doc said in the beginning that he was going to travel 25 years into the future. At the end of the first film he stated “about 30 years, its a nice round number”. Nobody knows the exact date that Doc went to because we’re never told, all we know is that Doc found out about the trouble that Marty’s family was in and backtracked it all to the robbery in 2015. For all we know Doc did travel to 2010, then went further ahead to see what else happened, and found out about Marty’s family then, and tracked it back to 2015.
@Ryan: read the tweet again. It says “Doc sets clock in the DeLorean to a day 25 years in the future”.
NO HE DOES NOT.
As you stated he says he’s going 25 years in the future. But he never sets the clock to 2010 because the Libyans attacked. The clock remained set to 1955. So the tweet is wrong period.
I had exactly the same suspicions when I saw the tweet doing the rounds yesterday – I suspect it was mostly confusion over the fact that the 25th Anniversary of the release of BTTF 1 was 3rd July….
