For study, and indexing, I
have recently purchased a collection of rare titles from Canada, the UK,
and Australia, that contain U.S. comic stories, covers, usually
relatively fairly contemporary to the U.S. printings. Often they have
different covers (some nicer – some less than…) that were never seen
in the States. The great thing about these books, foreign to the States,
is that it is a great way to read great Golden Age stories that are
otherwise unaffordable to many. Another bonus is that the very small
print runs of these books were approximately 2-5% of what was published in the States so many times there are only a couple known copies, and often
unique books. Most Canadian/UK/Australian titles would rank as Gerber 8,
9, and 10s, but the best thing is that despite the rarity they are a
relatively cheap way to get your hands on some great vintage books. Keep
your eyes peeled for some wild, weird, rarities, from all genres, as I
work my way through reading this collection.

This is a Bright, Glossy, Very Good+ copy, with supple WHITE pages, of the UK/Australian run of Super Adventure #40. Seeing
as the UK/Australian books had minuscule print runs, this one defines the word
“RARE” and were it a U.S. issue it would probably be given a Gerber 9 or
10, on the Scarcity index.

Super Adventure was Australia and Great Britain’s answer to World’s Finest Comics, featuring Superman stories, along with Batman. The stories are pure classics, and as an added bonus some have gorgeous covers, by an extraordinary Australian artist, Hart Amos, that were never used in the States, though they should have. If these tickle your fancy then keep checking in because over the next few days we will be listing countless UK/Australian rarities that make U.S. rarities look commonplace.

Superman in “The Six Elements of Crime”, from the U.S. issue of Superman #68 – featuring Lex Luthor, by Al Plastino.

Batman and Robin in “The Secret of Batman’s Utility Belt!” – from Detective Comics #185, by Dick Sprang, and Charles Paris, who despite the “Bob Kane” signature were two of the TRUE driving forces behind Batman, along with Bill Finger.

extant copy, and some are conjectured to have no surviving issues, so
